Why the turkey vultures keep coming back to Heron Marsh
Every spring a roost of turkey vultures settles into the tall sycamores along the marsh. Our naturalist explains why they come back, the best time to see them and how to watch without disturbing them.
When to look
Early morning, as the birds spread their wings to warm up before riding the thermals. The boardwalk overlook gives the clearest view.
How to watch
Stay on the boardwalk, keep voices low and leave dogs at home for this one. Binoculars help; a phone camera does not need to get close.
